The break-up is already being called “Wonderbrawl”. A smashed guitar, shouted words and angry exchanges on the internet signalled an end to the rock band Oasis yesterday.
Years of sibling rivalry between Noel and Liam Gallagher, who formed the band in their native Manchester in the early 1990s, blew up into a fight minutes before a concert in Paris on Friday night.
It ended with Liam smashing his brother’s guitar and Noel, the band’s chief songwriter, announcing two hours later on the Oasis website that he was quitting.
Noel has briefly walked out on the group before, as has Liam, the lead singer. Sources say Noel’s departure seems final this time. If so, Oasis will have lost its creative force, even if Liam tries to tour under the name.
Insiders say Noel, 42, was becoming increasingly upset with Liam, 36, for not looking after his voice and for his erratic behaviour. Noel had already arranged to play with Amorphous Androgynous, another band, at a concert next month.
