Guitar Messenger was founded in 2007 during my studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I was writing a column called ‘Talk With the Guitar Masters’ for the college newspaper, the Groove. As print issues of the newspaper came and went, so did my articles and I was hoping to find a way to preserve them as time passed – so Guitar Messenger was born. At first, it was an archive of existing interviews, but it quickly grew into an online guitar magazine featuring various article formats and artists.
As relationships with featured artists grew into friendships, so did the desire to add more varied content to Guitar Messenger. We began including lessons and transcriptions – some focused on specific musical topics, others that we called ‘Artist Masterclasses’ that dove deep into a given artist’s style. In 2012, we released our first instructional DVD – Scar Guitar – featuring Per Nilsson. In 2016, we issued our second DVD release – THUMP! – breaking down the techniques of Tosin Abasi.
Whether the content was an interview, review, or lesson, the mission statement has always been the same: for any given musical subject, to provide an in-depth analysis or discussion, presented in a clear and detailed manner. Any artist we featured was one we felt passionate about and wanted to share with the guitar community.
These principles hold true today. In 2023, we relaunched this website with a focus on online courses, while also refreshing the rich archive of hundreds of articles we’ve published over the years. We hope you enjoy browsing Guitar Messenger, as much as we’ve loved creating its content over the last 15+ years.
